I have heard many stories from my dad and his earlier years of life. He was the middle child out of 3 brothers. He was the first to put himself through college to become a architect and he knew exactly what he wanted. Taking different jobs like working at an In and Out and then a Movie theatre. He went to 3 different schools in order to graduate with a masters in landscape architecture and engineering. In society we can sometimes lack a balance. “vaguely aware that they are not living the spiritually richest life, who are ill-equipped to know how they might do so, who don’t have the time to do so, and who, when they go off to find fulfillment, end up devoting themselves to scattershot causes and light religions”(Brooks 4). Brooks states that we lack a spiritual side to counter our ambition and that it is making us unbalanced. There is not necessary a lack of spirituality but a lack of culture or faith to be present with ambition. Negative ambition is like a fever “But the fever, like communism before it, stripped away the deep rich spiritual traditions of Buddhism and Taoism. Society hardened. Corruption became rampant”(Brooks 8). Ambition can ruin our society. it strips away at who we are it even deep traditions can be forgot with a negative powerful ambition. It’s important to understand the consequences of what ambition can do to us and our society and how it can ruin us entirely.
