"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all". With my hand placed over my heart, I am brought back to elementary school reciting this verse with thirty other students in my class. The fifty-star banner hung motionless and proud in the corner of the room and as my teacher begins the verse, thirty young voices instantly chime in. This pledge had a power behind the words that I could feel yet I didn’t know why. Now I rarely hear these powerful words at school or in public, and I wonder what is happening to America; we are losing our religion, our sense of unity, and the equality for all American citizens. To me, liberty is referring to our freedoms as American citizens and justice regarding the fair treatment of all individuals. While we fought for liberty to create our nation, we are now trampling our rights due to ignorance. Americans fought for the liberty and separation from England to create a promise land. Civil rights activists fought segregation for the right of equal treatment regardless of race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. Women activists fought for their right to vote alongside men as equals. Yet these battles have not been won and America will not be considered a promise land if we continue the path that we are traveling. While segregation is now illegal, race relations are still a problem. The right to vote is being overruled by our unwillingness, both male and female, to go out and express our voice in government and constitutional right to vote. My vision for America would be for everyone to know and exercise their rights. The men and women before us have sacrificed their lives for a better tomorrow, and it is time that we uphold their sacrifice and reap the rewards as a
