American Muslim and human rights activist Malcolm X once emphasized, “You can’t separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.” America has always been known for its diverse society and atmosphere. Numerous individuals see America as the land of opportunity, or the land of the free. However, this land has not always been open to diversity. Innumerable citizens in present day and especially looking back, suffered the mistreatment of certain groups and government laws. One of the most known acts of rebellion due to these mistreatments is known as the Civil rights movement which took place between the 1950s and 1960s. America has always seen the people of the black community as less, which has led to a lot of common discrimination events. A well known one was the confrontation between a passenger, Rosa Parks, and the driver of the public bus. She was part of the African American community and was racially discriminated against by the bus driver and the system at that time. At that time there were certain things and places designated for the colored crown. In this scenario, black people were to sit at the back of the bus and the white people had their designated seats at the front of the bus. However, that day there was no more space and the bus driver asked her and three other colored individuals to give up their seats for the white folks, to which she refused to comply and resulted in getting arrested. This infuriated the colored community and was one of the motives to why civil rights commenced. Following this, numerous protests aroused and chaos stormed the cities. Their main aim was to change the way that society views them which led them into creating a couple of acts, one of them being the Immigration and Nationality act in 1965. Which emphasized on equality and justice that need to be made regarding their culture and people. This resulted in an increase of immigration coming from Asia, and provided them with greater cultural diversity and more economic opportunities. On behalf of these groups, the women of America were also affected by the rights movement. Although women were considered citizens, they weren’t able to do all the things that male citizens were allowed to do, one of them being voting. Women played an important role in the civil rights movement since it somewhat interfered with the women rights movement. They too wanted to spread awareness of gender discrimination in America. They aimed for gender equality in voting, pay, and other gender based discrimination taking place in society. This provided better education for women and an atmosphere less gender discriminatory.
