World War I was an exciting time in history for both African Americans and women. What began as a seemingly distant European conflict soon became an event with revolutionary implications for the social, economic, and political future of African Americans . The war directly impacted all African Americans, male and female, northerner and southerner, soldier and civilian. Migration, military service, racial violence, and political protest combined to make the war marks one of the most dynamic periods of the African-American experience. Between 1914 and 1920, roughly 500,000 Southern African Americans packed their bags and headed to the North, fundamentally transforming the social, cultural, and political landscape of cities such as Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Detroit. Women's Rights saw its first major victory in the 1920s when the 19th Amendment was passed by Congress, which granted women the right to vote. This was a huge milestone in the Women's Rights Movement. The right to vote was the focus of the Women's Rights Movement. Women around the world wanted political equality between men and women. Women were starting to take a more active role in the war effort, women obtained jobs in factories to support the war.. Women believed that obtaining the right to vote would ensure that prohibition laws would be passed, an issue of major significance to women in that era. They also wanted to reform property laws, equal guardianship of children, new divorce laws, improved working conditions, higher wages, and access to higher education. To get what they wanted, women formed a number of organizations, including the National American Woman Suffrage Association and what would later become known as the National Organization of Women, also refered to as N.O.W.
