Ella: American ideals are like the “American Dream”. Katherine: They represent things like freedom, equality, rights, democracy, liberty, opportunity and many more. Maddie: During readings such as “Rules of the Game “, “Two Kinds”, “Lost Boys”, and “Rice & Rose Bowl Blues” we can see examples of American ideals. Parts of the text reflect these ideals, while others fail to show American Ideals. Ella: During the reading, “ Two Kinds” there were a few big examples of the American Ideal. A main part if the story was the mother, trying to have her daughter become a prodigy and be good at something. Throughout the story the main character Jing-mei tries out different activities to try see what she is good at. One that I saw is that the boys were all able to attend a some kind of school and receive an education. Riak, the youngest of the 3 brothers, was able to attend the local junior high. Maduk, the middle child, was able to attend high school. Peter began his adult education classes. This reflects American ideals because it shows opportunity. By coming to America they were all able to have the opportunity to attend school. Another example is that the government supplied the boys with food stamps to buy food. This is also opportunity, because by giving them food stamps they are able to get the opportunity to start a life without having to worry about buying food. The boys also were given donations from local churches, which supplied the boys with toothpaste, bread, and bananas. This gave them the opportunity to focus on getting an education, and just having to pay for the bare necessities. (rent and
