Both Germany and The United States have education systems, while they both require education for minors, they still have many differences. These education systems also share positives and negatives. Overall, German schools and American schools are very different because of the overall set up of the school systems.
In America, you would go to pre-school, kindergarten, elementary, middle school, and high school. Depending on your future goals you might go to college or a trade school. In Germany you might go to kindergarten and then Grundschule until fifth grade, then based on your grades you will go to one of three schools: Hauptschule, Realschule, or Gymnasium. These schools serve three different “life paths”. Hauptschule goes until ninth grade and prepares you for a vocational school. Realschule goes until tenth grade and offers a higher vocational school or even a combination with gymnasium. Gymnausium is the highest level of school and goes up until the thirteenth grade. People who go to gymnasium most likely go on to university.
In a German school you will not find two things that almost all American schools have, a heating and air conditioning system. German schools do not use these, for a few reasons. German students take a test called the Arbitur. The Arbitur allows German students in Gymnasium to graduate. It is an exit exam. Also along the lines of tests, the German grading system is much different from the American grading systems. Where we use the letters A-F to represent our grades, German students use the numbers 1-6.
