“Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. ”(Lee,149) This quote meanings is, courage is not winning the battle or even participating in it, it means knowing you going to lose the battle, but fighting anyways and dealing with the embarrassment because you know you're in the right,so standing up for the right thing even if society is against it. This teaches to always fight for what you believe is right of fair.
Courage is being brave and taking the risk of doing something. In the book Witness by Karen Hesse many citizens did not like African-Americans , Jews and Catholics. Leonora Sutter, a character in the book, is a 12-year-old who is African-American and everyday deals with many citizens not liking her because the color of her skin. Courage comes in many ways and Leonora keeping her head high and not paying attention to it is an example. There are many racist people in the town like the KKK.

Knowing that Grendel was a very dangerous character, Beowulf chose to offer up his services to halt the terror being caused by Grendel. No one had to seek him out; rather he came on his own accords simply for the good of these people living in King Hrothgar’s kingdom. He put himself in dangers way even though he no real tie to these people, and not asking about any sort of payment before going out on the hunt.
The best example of moral courage during this time would have to be Oskar Schindler because he had saved more than one-thousand Jews by keeping them healthy and taking really good care of them. Oskar Schindler had shown that he had the moral courage by taking in more than one thousand Jews into work and took good care of them. This quote shows that he wanted to help the Jews and that was the humane thing to do. “There was no choice, if you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car, wouldn't you help him?” This has shown that he wanted to help the Jews and not let them suffer.

An epic hero is an individual who must evoke a sense of heroism through legendary and inspiring deeds (Merriam-Webster). These heroes of tragedy have the ability to determine their own fortune due to the amount of admired characteristics they possess. However, the ideals of an epic hero are constantly fluctuating due to the ever changing ideals of society. Although the characteristics of an epic hero are under constant modification, Beowulf is still an effective modern-day hero due to his acts of courage, compassion, and dedication in relation to his people.
