During your childhood how did you learn to cope with your emotions? Scout is going through different emotions. She is learning how to control and deal with them while growing up. Her Aunt Alexandra, sister of her father, Atticus, comes into town and changes things for Scout. Scout doesn't like that her aunt is trying to take over. Scout feels that her life is completely changing from what she is used to. Her Aunt tries to teach Scout how to act like a girl. Scout talks about her femininity, believing that being a girl is bad and being a boy is good. Her brother Jem strengthens this idea, to him being a girl is not a positive thing. Jem attacks Scout’s gender and insults her about acting like a girl whenever he feels she challenges his manhood. Atticus tries to teach Scout about controlling her emotions and urges. Atticus tells Scout to fight with her head and not her fists. Atticus defending a black man causes people in town to look down on him. Scout is getting teased in school because of this. Scout's cousin was making fun of her father for defending a black man. Scout let her emotions get the best of her and punched him.Scout had disobeyed what her father said not to do. Her consequence was getting spanked by her Uncle Jack. Scout told her Uncle, “you ain’t fair, you’re real nice, Uncle Jack, an’ I reckon I love you even after what you did, but you don’t understand children much.” Scout had explained to her Uncle what her cousin had said. “A nigger lover. I ain’t very sure what it means, but the way Francis said it, tell you one thing right now, Uncle Jack, I’ll be – I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say somethin’ about Atticus.” Uncle Jack ends up regretting spanking Scout.
