Scout and Jem Finch were attacked while they were walking home from a pageant, held by the school she goes to, by Bob Ewell, a man who nearly lost a court case against a black man, Tom Robinson, since he was caught lying. But since he was white, and more trusted he won the case. Now, people understand that he lied and now do not trust him. Bob was angry, and blamed Atticus, scout and jem’s father, or Tom Robinson’s lawyer. When she goes over to her cousin Francis’ house he proves to be mean and a bit of a gossip. He talks badly about both Dill and her father, which angers her of course. She begins fighting him and causing Uncle Jack to rush over. Francis frantically lies to his grandmother and tells her that Scout jumped him and called him a whore-lady. Scout gets punished, even though she did not start the scuttle, and when they head home, she ignores both her father and uncle and walks off towards her room. Uncle Jack walks in and begins telling her off. Scout fusses and when Jack’s chides grow louder she cuts him off. “You gonna give me a chance to tell you? I don’t mean to sass you, I’m just tryin‘ to tell you.” Uncle Jack sat down on the bed. His eyebrows came together, and he peered up at me from under them. “Proceed,” he said. I took a deep breath. “Well, in the first place you never stopped to gimme a chance to tell you my side of it—you just lit right into me. When Jem an‘ I fuss Atticus doesn’t ever just listen to Jem’s side of it, he hears mine too, an’ in the second place you told me never to use words like that except in ex-extreme provocation, and Francis provocated me enough to knock his block off—” Uncle Jack scratched his head. “What was your side of it, Scout?” “Francis called Atticus somethin‘, an’ I wasn’t about to take it off him.” “What did Francis call him?” “A nigger-lover. Scout, Jem, and Dill snuck out after Atticus to see what he was going to be doing. When they arrived so had the Old Sarum. After they demanded to give Tom to them, Scout moved into the center of everyone. Desperate after not being able to get a conversation out of anyone, she tries to talk to Mr. Cunningham since she knew his son. She attempts to explain herself to Aticus saying “Well, Atticus, I was just sayin‘ to Mr. Cunningham that entailments are bad an’ all that, but you said not to worry, it takes a long time sometimes… that you all’d ride it out together…” I was slowly drying up, wondering what idiocy I had committed. Entailments seemed alright enough for living room talk. I began to feel sweat gathering at the edges of my hair; I could stand anything but a bunch of people looking at me. They were quite still. “What’s the matter?” I asked. Atticus said nothing. I looked around and up at Mr. Cunningham, whose face was equally impassive. Then he did a peculiar thing. He squatted down and took me by both shoulders. “I’ll tell him you said hey, little lady,” he said. Then he straightened up and waved a big paw. “Let’s clear out,” he called. “Let’s get going, boys.” (153) She caused the entire group to
