In the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, bullying is a big part of Junior’s life. At the reservation, Junior gets bullied not only because he is how he is but because the kids on the rez are mean and rude. Junior got in many fights because of all the kids bullying him, so he fought back against them. Junior also is bullied in Readen because he is Indian. Junior is bullied in Readen and on the rez because he doesn’t fully belong in either of those two worlds, but the bullying doesn’t stop him from achieving his goals.
Sledge lived and witnessed horrifying experiences at the beach of Pelilieu that were told in his story With the Old Breed. Although, to us, the beach is a calm getaway, Pelilieu is the furthest thing from calm. The story really shows the loss of hope from Sledge and the overall struggle against the Japanese troops. When Sledge first describes the battle, he gives off a hell type vibe filled with fatalities for every second he fought through in the Pacific with the other marines. Uglies by Scott Westerfield is a dystopia in which Westerfield tries to bring attention to the major issues in our society today. One is our fixation on perfection in appearance that could lead to the loss of individuality, the second being our ignorance towards science and the harmful effects we have on the world. Societies beauty standards and obsession with perfection must change or we will all lose our identity and uniqueness. In this scene, Tally and Shay are at the Ruins and Shay explains to Tally how their society is brainwashing everyone into believing a certain beauty standard, since there is nothing natural about what they perceive as beautiful.
