Impact of Internet Shopping and Retail Parks on the High Streets
The two main reasons why high streets in the UK are declining because of internet shopping and retail parks. People prefer to shop online than go to the high streets because of many reasons. One of the reasons that online shopping is convenient as you can shop from anywhere, on any device that has access to the internet. This means that people can avoid the expensive parking fees, travel and the queue in shops which is what happens when you shop on the high street. Also, if people are disabled or have limited mobility they can easily shop online and have the products delivered to them. This means that they do not need to go to the high street to buy products. In the case of Tonypandy the ASDA store has contributed to the closure of many small shops in Tonypandy such as fruiterers, butchers and also large shops such as The CO OP has been affected by the massive spending power of ASDA. This is because all of the shops on the high street failed to meet the low prices offered by the superstore.
The local authority has also contributed to the downturn in Tonypandy high street, Residents Parking schemes in all the surrounding streets, stop shoppers parking this combined with the expensive car par charges for all car parks in the area, are turning the shoppers away from Tonypandy high street. Furthermore in the high street you can see are yellow lines everywhere preventing the elderly and even the disabled people from parking. This is a major factor for the decline in footfall of shoppers in Tonypandy High
