Tom can be compared to many other characters like Hilly Holbrook from The Help. Although Hilly is the antagonist in the book they have many things in common. “Hilly on the surface is the ideal Southern housewife: loyal to her husband, adored by her friends and neighbors, and loving to her two children. But underneath the surface, Hilly harbors viciously racist beliefs that spur her to treat the black women in the novel as if they were subhuman,” (Plaue). Both Tom and Hilly control the people they hang out with.
The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is about how the interactions between money and love have major effects on the relationships between Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby. The relationship between Tom and Daisy is built more on money rather than love, however, there is little bits of love. Daisy marries Tom because of his wealth, but throughout their relationship she does, fall in love with Tom at least once. Also, Tom uses his money to basically buy Daisy’s love showing that he wants to have love in his life. The relationship between Gatsby and Daisy is also built on wealth, but it also involves love, alike the relationship of Tom and Daisy.
The compelling novel, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape by Peter Hedges, incorporates many complex relationships. This novel is narrated by the main character, 24-year old Gilbert Grape. Gilbert is the main caregiver to his dysfunctional family. He works to keep the roof over his obese mother, ungrateful younger sister, Ellen, overly stressed older sister, Amy, and mentally challenged younger brother, Arnie. With all of this unwanted responsibility, Gilbert does not have many relationships.
