The assigned reading challenged my understanding of Crossing Classes by helping me to realize just how hard it can be transitioning from one class to another. Specifically, there are obstacles such as classism, peer/familial judgement, and ressentiment that can come with crossing classes. Within this reading, they relate Crossing Classes to both communication studies and women’s studies. Specifically, in the article “Across the Great Divide: Crossing Classes and Clashing Cultures”, by Barbara Jensen, she states how classes have their own kind of culture. Specifically, they have their own unique language and mannerisms. They are so “subtle” that they are picked up by growing up in that culture/class. Specifically, I learned that there are a lot of psychological obstacles that come with transitioning to a new class. My personal experience and academic knowledge surrounding Crossing Classes have many similarities and differences. Personally, I thought moving up a class was something that everyone applauded, but turns out only some people will actually accept you for it. I think it is human nature to have a preference for your group and not wanting others to potentially change that.
