“Have you ever wondered what a human life is worth? That morning, my brother’s was worth a pocket watch.”(Sepetys 27) Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys is about a girl from Lithuania, and Night by Elie Wiesel is about a boy from Sighet. Both Lina and Elie suffered immensely, but survived through determination, hope, and strength and most people today will never have to go through that. Elie was from a town called Sighet,he studied the Talmud and Kabbalah. He meets Moshe the Beadle, who helps him by teaching him. Moshe was deported to Poland, but on the way Germans stopped the train and massacred the people. Moshe escaped and went back to Sighet to warn people, but nobody believed him. Her mother died soon after and she had to look after her brother all by herself. It started to look bad, but then a doctor came to the camp and helped all the people that were still alive. There are some differences between Night and Between Shades of Gray. One of the differences is that in Night the Nazi’s are the ones that take them and in Between Shades of Gray it was Soviets. In Night the families were split up and in Between Shades of Gray they were able to stay together. Also in Night the officers killed majority of them and in Between Shades of Gray the NKVD didn’t really kill them. Now there was also many similarities between Night and Between Shades of Gray. They were both working long hours for little food which caused many people to die of malnourishment. Then as they became desperate they started stealing stuff.
