According to Quindlen, this is an example of America’s crazed consumerism and it is absolutely absurd. In her article, “Honestly, You Shouldn’t Have”, she states that there is currently an assumption that purchasing American merchandises symbolize an act of patriotism and at the same time, build a strong economy. She also states that we, as Americans, need to acknowledge important spiritual values such as friends and family rather than material goods.
In the excerpt from M.T. Anderson’s Feed, the author shows how deceiving stores can be. The way employees are, and how they attempt to make their products fit into each individual person’s life, can become deceitful. Consumerism is a movement to protect consumers against useless, inferior, or dangerous products, misleading advertising, and unfair pricing. UBIK and Feed give good examples of Consumerism, although the excerpt from Feed does an outstanding job of showing examples of consumerism while getting straight to the point. In UBIK, the author has ads for a product as the beginning of each chapter.

“A&P” written by John Updike, uses a fictional situation to describe how Sammy’s actions are an example of consumerism. His actions, and his thoughts about those around him were used to explain consumerism today. Sammy used his thoughts to highlight how he felt about every character and he used his actions like quitting his job to display consumerism. Consumerism was implied not only from the customers in the store but the physical items in the grocery store. Consumerism was also exposed through the lustful actions of Sammy and his defiance in work leading to him quitting his job.
