College Free for All In an editorial titled “Make College Free For All” written in The Washington Post Bernie Sanders attempts to persuade the middle class and his peers that free college will be beneficial. He argues that we live in a highly competitive economy and a higher education is needed to survive in the work area. With that being said, unfortunately with the rising costs he realizes that not everybody can afford a higher education. Overall, he wants to have a stronger economy and offering free higher education would be a step towards that goal. Sanders' argument is effective due to his credibility, the factual evidence he includes, and his stance on his topic.

His first thing he talks about is how schools cost is expanding as more and more students enroll. He then proceeds to talk about how the cost of college is the main obstacle and they are turning down students and their education because of that cost. The final reason Andrew P. Community College Tuition Should Not Be Free In the article, “As He Promotes It, Some Question Obama’s Free Community College Idea”, by Joanne Jacobs, the issue is brought up that making community college free will bring more issues than solutions. “Tuition shouldn’t be free for those who can afford to pay”, said Bezerra, a student at Rio Hondo College, a community college near Los Angeles. Making community college free will only draw in higher and mid classes and eventually push out the lower class of students attempting to get into community college. Everyone needs to pay tuition in order to benefit the rest as a whole. I agree with the reasoning that everyone needs to pay tuition.
However, it would be far more beneficial if the American government simply provided free tuition at community colleges than have students go through a program. College tuition is a high price to pay in order to get an education in America. According to Taylor et al., “a record share of students are leaving college with a substantial debt burden” (1). Additionally, the “rapid rise in tuition costs has contributed to the accumulation of $1.4 trillion in total student loan debt in the United States,” the second highest source of financial obligation (“College”). If college was tuition-free, education would be accessible to all, no matter financial status. Americans will not have to worry about the price, leading to several Tuition-free college would “significantly increase the college-attainment among students from low- and moderate-income families” (Bergeron and Martin).
Having free tuition for college means that more people who cannot afford it now, would end up going. This is a good thing in terms that more people are getting a good education and continuing their educational careers to hopefully obtain good job, but it also decrease the value of a college education. If more people are able to earn degrees, it devalues them. Finding jobs even with their qualifications would be difficult (Should college be free?). This idea would also apply to the students, mainly student-athletes, that work for multiple years to try to perfect their skill and obtain full or half scholarship.
Although tuition-free programs may seem like a very great thing all around there are still some downsides to them. The main disadvantage is that students who can already afford college may affect those who cannot afford college by abusing the free-tuition system. Another disadvantage would be that implementing these programs may hinder a student from being forced into attending college when that said student may not want to attend college or may not be academically proficient enough to succeed in a college setting. This is an estimate using the statistics of the amount of students that have enrolled into community college from the school years 2013-2014, which is unlikely to remain the same.
