Unit 2 Discussion: Prenatal Development Readings: Chapter 3 and 4 A teratogen is any exposure in the environment such as drugs, illnesses, alcohol that can cause substantial harm to an unborn or breastfeeding baby. There are some teratogens that even if the mother was exposed to or poisoned at one point before getting pregnant can still cause harm to the unborn baby even if she is no longer exposed. Lead can be considered a teratogen as it is a toxic metal and can cause harm during the embryonic period.
In Chapter Three: The Early Years, the author reflects on the role race plays in children’s lives and how they perceive racial differences. The question used in the title, “Is my skin brown because I drink chocolate milk?”, generally reflects the author’s stance on how young children view race: with slight puzzlement and an assumption that white should be the default. By far chapter three, four and five have been my favorite. I was able to learn and understand more in depth the definition of what judgment of learning and the feeling of knowing really means. On chapter three I was able to learn about how people’s memory work while monitoring themselves. This phase of Prenatal development is marked by the longest duration and surprising change and growth. During the third month of your pregnancy, the sexual organs begin to differentiate and form all parts of the body until the end of the moon. At this point, the fetus weighs about three grams. The fetus continues to grow both in weight and height, although a large proportion of physical growth occurs in later stages of the pregnancy. The end of the third month marks the end of the first three months of your pregnancy.
