The children in a school are valued, with an environment that fully encourages and celebrates their learning and progression and how they are developing. The provision of a safe and secure learning environment for all its pupils should be provided through recognizing the importance of welcoming diversity and equal opportunities. The atmosphere within a school should be positive, with this being reflected in the attitudes of the staff and pupils, all caring for and taking pride in their surroundings and in how the learning journey of each pupil takes
The behavior management philosophy of this child care facility is to foster a loving, nurturing environment that promotes the wellbeing and overall intelligence of the children that we interact with through our practice. We believe it is in the best interest of the child to encounter diversity in their child care facility. We also believe that the child should learn their work through play, genuine encounters with their peers and adults, and pacifying their curiosity through exploration of their interests. Section II: Prevention Strategies: Creating an appropriate climate To create an appropriate climate within our childcare facility, the staff and teachers have been trained on the proper protocol to ensure that disturbances are brief, clear,
CD 452 Professional Development Reflection The first lesson I chose was Power of Language for Infants and Toddlers. Each lesson taught how to build relationships, language, and every word builds a healthy brain. It taught how to respond to a child in a positive way, there are 5 elements to the responses.
Therefore, we already present two possibly considerably hurdles that fortunately the majority of children manage to overcome smoothly. This is somewhat due to the management of their learning environment and the creation of a warm, positive and encouraging ethos. However, as we know not all children react in the same way to situations and It is clear that when teaching a class of children of any age how disruptive behaviour can negatively impact all involved, leading to the need of a program of positive behaviour strategies that is followed consistently throughout a school.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) or PBiS can give us as teachers is based on understanding why problem behaviors occur - the behavior's function. This school wide approach is to celebrate student successes as a whole, in classrooms, and individual students. As a team we will brain storm ideas of researched based strategies to increase academic performance, increase safety, decrease problem behavior, and establish positive school cultures. I model appropriate behaviors, establish routines and simple rules in the classroom, speak positively with the children, understand that children may not be ready to share, and they need to explore and experiment with control and saying ‘no’. I realize that all children may show challenging behaviors – they are learning to control their bodies, and to control their emotions. I feel the most important aspect of positive guidance for challenging behavior is to build strong relationships with the children. These relationships allow me to know exactly what each child needs in terms of developing their social, emotional, and problem-solving skills, their self-regulation, and their
(p. 12-13). During a recent professional development training, I had the opportunity to hear Mendler speak and to collaborate with him in a small group setting. Many of the strategies that he discusses in his book and highlights in his professional development seminars (Mendler, 2023) are like those noted by Breaux and Whitaker (2010). Additionally, Mendler’s (2022) anecdotes utilize these components proactively as a preventative measure against disciplinary issues. In the text, Mendler (2022) uses the analogy of
Build positive relationships with students will help establish a more comfortable classroom environment. Michie have put a great amount of effort at trying to get to know his students on a more personal level, such as through individual home visiting and personal questionnaires about each student’s likes and dislikes about school. In order for students to feel that the information is relevant to them, teachers should make connections and relate to real life examples. Michie uses his past classroom experiences to connect to his students and further sparks class discussion. Michie would try to relate to what the students were going through in their lives to get to know them better.
Teachers have the power to determine whether their classroom will be a caring atmosphere or an authoritarian environment for the students. Teachers need to curb their ego and model empathy, positive attitude, and leadership skills. She believes that if teachers use positive attitudes when dealing with difficult students, the students will respect the teacher more; therefore, the students will have better behaviors. Showing empathy toward the students will result in the student feeling like someone understands them. Creating relationships with students helps them feel safe in their environment and comfortable talking to the teacher.
The article “Effective Classroom- Management & Positive Teaching,” written by Katharina Sieberer-Nagler gives insight to elementary school educators about how to be more informed and experienced in their field by providing creative methods to deal with struggles new educators may not have a grasp of yet.
I had the pleasure of visiting with Mrs. Cooke’s fifth grade class during my clinical experiences. Mrs. Cooke has a great rapport with her students and has very little difficult actively engaging students in learning. One of the “takeaways” from my visit references the students’ and teachers’ commitment to the principles of “The Leader in Me”. From a school-wide perspective, East Elementary School does not practice the traditional positive behavior interventions. Instead, the administration has adopted the ideals and principles behind “The Leader in Me”.
