Faith journeys are relative to a variety of different upbringings people have, and no one is exactly alike another, as God's relationship with people is personal. Moreover, my own faith journey is different from others. However, faith journeys can look very much alike in comparison. A novel titled Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya tells the faith journey of a young boy named Antonio, growing up in New Mexico during the early 1900's. The faith journey he has and the one I have are both similar and different. Antonio grows up in a very religious Catholic home, though as he grows up, his views and ideas change as he learns of different spiritual ways of faith. The beginning of this change begins at the arrival of Ultima, a curandera. After the arrival of Ultima, she introduces Antonio to the idea of spirits in all life and their value. Antonio grew up in a religious home, went to catechism, and had his first communion. My experience is different from this. When I was a baby, I was baptized a Catholic. However, I have never attended catechism, nor have I had my first communion. In my own experience, I had not learned what church was until I was around 7 years old. Surprisingly, I learned about Catholicism through my grandma, a figure similar to Ultima. Eventually I asked her to take me to church, which gave way into me beginning my faith journey. After this, I began going to church more often, around once every month. However, my faith journey took a big turn once high school came around. I decided to go to Bellarmine. This opened up a completely new door to me, teaching me the ways of God and the goodness of people. Furthermore — and most importantly, Bellarmine taught me about the power of God's love.
