I’ve recently watched the cinematic recipient of the Political Film Society Award for Human Rights, Rosewood, and by all means did all those involved deserve more recognition. The movie tells of the racially motivated massacre of blacks in a small town called Rosewood in Florida. The masterpiece dramatizes some aspects of the event while of course adding love stories to the horrific truth of uncontrollable lynch mobs in the south. This film has been understated for quite some years now and it's time that schools use it as a medium to spread awareness of the real tragedies that occurred when America wasn’t the land of the free. Before he was the star of HBO’s House of Lies, Don Cheadle played as Sylvester Carrier. I saw Carrier in a different light and he gave an outstanding performance. Jon Voight starred at the new sheriff in town. His acting really made me sympathize for those whites who did not want to be seen as “nigger lovers” and were ambivalent towards what was was really right. Michael Rooker is currently known for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and The Walking Dead. His role as Sheriff Walker was not as good as his past works. He seemed to portray the same emotion two-thirds of the film. I feel he could have done a better job. Elise Neal plays Beaulah or “Scrappie” as the lover of Mr. Mann or Ving Rhames. I really do hate when love makes its way into serious movies, however, their performance was mild enough to make me swoon and focus on the bigger picture. I would say it was perfect; from the cast’s unbelieveable talent to the screenplay. On the other hand, this is America. Some scenes were a bit too dramatic while others caused me to bang my fists on the table. In one scene, the woman who cried rape was being surrounded by her fellow white neighbors trying to comfort her. The acting was just beyond terrible in this scene and it made me want to gag. I thought this was going to be some low budget, C-list movie, that was going to bore me.
