In an essay titled “It Is a Delusion to Think Having a Gun in the Home Makes Us Safer” Nicholas Kristof the author goes into the growing issue the people of America face. Kristof sides against the average person having possession of a gun in the debate on whether guns make your home safer. In his argument, Kristof talks about the link between crime and gun purchases. He then mentions the process for obtaining a gun and the deaths of people in relation to gun violence. Meaning that we as Americans have been so attached to weaponry that people who aren’t in America became concerned or just make fun of us for the lack of restraint towards violence. It’s to a point where even in Japan they are taught when traveling to America to learn key phrases because it might just save your life. America has more killings with guns in one single common school shooting than Japan has. Kristof understands that we aren’t going to eliminate guns from the general populous of America. Instead, he suggests making it harder to purchase a gun. Kristof says, "As I write this, I happen to be in Mississippi, which has a much more rigorous process to adopt a dog than to acquire a gun". He also mentions California’s experiment in editing the law around guns. The test run by California ended up reducing its gun violence by around 38 percent. Kristof then gets to the meat of his essay and his general point. He wants people to stop thinking owning a gun makes you safer. He understands that they could prevent a crime but retorts by saying it is more likely to become a murder instead of a hero story. The author isn't wrong. More people having guns means more gun violence. No one should question the statistics because it's true. Personally, I don’t like guns but that’s because I've witnessed such violence and the sound just shakes my brain. Though I have to admit I for the longest time used to think owning a gun would make me safer. Before I read this essay, I already no longer wanted one and he just reinforced that but at the same time didn’t. He mentioned all these people getting shot and it made me feel unsafe.
