The Essay “Why Don’t We Complain” written by William F. Buckley Jr. is about convincing Americans that it’s time to speak their minds and start complaining. Today’s society, Americans would rather accept inconveniences than speak their voice and create a better life for oneself. Americans should say something to someone with a higher power to change the problem they are having an issue with, so he or she can benefit from the change. An example from the essay, Buckley and his wife went to the movie theaters and the movie was out of focus.
In the selection, “Your Question for Author Here” by Kate DiCamillo and Jon Sciezka, the main character, Joe Jones, faces man vs. man conflict with Maureen O’Toople. Joe Jones has to complete an assignment, which requires him to collect “author stuff” from letters to an author. Since he doesn’t want to do this task, he insults Maureen O’Toople in his first letter. In the beginning of the story, Maureen responds to Joe’s rude letter with a deal. She will get to ask a question and receive an answer, in order for Joe to ask one of the author questions.

Other popular examples of stories of initiation are “ Young Goodman Brown” and “ I want to Know Why” which are both stories of initiation, where the protagonist learns people aren't always as nice as they seem. Even though they both teach the same thing “Young Goodman Brown” has a darker mood. This is seen in the setting, characters, and the effects the lesson has on the protagonist.

As a whole, the values are presented in everyday lives of a student. “A Good Man” by Mark Shriver exemplifies the core values throughout the novel. More specifically, the novel strongly conveys the value empowerment. “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou introduces the value of respect in a beautifully displayed poem.
