What is happiness? What are Cultures? Do cultures affect happiness? In Marianna Pogosyan's article ¨How Does Culture Affect Our Happiness? ¨ she talks about culture´s influence on happiness, the meaning of happiness across cultures, and the pursuit of happiness across cultures. Many cultures have unique ways of viewing happiness some view happiness as luck and fortune or as something you work and thrive for. Each culture has its own views and meaning of happiness. The author uses many ways to back up her article, one being logos a type of writing. Logos is an appeal to the audience in a logical way of thinking. I agree with the article because the author uses three types of logos: logic, proof, and statistics.

Statistics or stats are studying methods for collecting, and analyzing data and then putting it into numerical form. Pogosyan explains, ¨[r]esearch spanning four decades, 182 countries, 97 studies, for instance, has shown that out of seven discrete emotions (anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise), happiness is the most accurately recognized expression across cultures¨ (p.1). Therefore, by giving numbers and other data, Pogosyan uses statistics to support her article. Next, Marianna Pogosyan exclaims that, ¨[i]n fact, a meta-analysis of the definition of happiness among 30 nations revealed that elements of luck and fortune are at least partially included among 80% of the nations´ understanding of happiness, just as they were in ancient China and Greece, where happiness was... luck and fortune. (In the US, the definition of happiness no longer includes... good luck and fortune...) ¨ (p.2). Thus, when Pogosyan is giving the percentages, she is backing up her information with real numbers.
