I didn’t learn to read or write until I was 7 years old. I was in my second grade class and my peers and I were sitting in a circle when the teacher called on me to read. I sputtered some gibberish with a tomato red face. The only words I recognized were “it’s” “it,” and “a”- which is really just a letter.
Personal Literacy Narrative Reading and writing is a tool everybody needs in their lifetime the basic reading and writing skills are used on a daily base no matter what field you plan to study. Reading and writing are taught at a young age. I personally was taught by preschool I noticed on how I grew with my writing and how I became a better reader and writer throughout my life I personal love reading and writing it’s a way for everyone to express themselves through their choice of words. To me literacy is the ability of a person not only to read and write, but also being able to understand, perceive the value of the information and put it into use. Children covered in glitter and glue is a sight to witness. Scattered around the room are broken crayons, uncapped markers, and torn paper scraps. This image at the end of the day at a preschool means that it has been a good day. When the day had just begun the sound of feet pattering and bouncing down the hallway was perceptible. The teachers knew that when all the children entered the room and saw the table aligned with crafts every student’s eyes would light up with excitement.
The history of my literacy has been a long road of a frustration and learned lessons. As a child, I was a bit of a loner so reading and writing were the closest thing to a social life for me. The things that I bottled up inside came out through my writing and it became somewhat of a pass time for me. As long I could remember literacy as has been an important value for me in my life because from very young age I got express my true self without being judged by the outside. Even though in my later years I would deal with some heartaches and set back that lead me to give up on my love for reading.

My relationship with literacy has been a journey all on its own. From learning how to sound out letters and words, to reading my first sentence , I have developed quite a valuable foundation and platform, that will eventually guide me to success. I have had the pleasure of experiencing a love that just continues to blossom. A love that will never fail, nor will I fail it. This love that I speak of is my passion for reading, writing and literacy as a whole.
The musty aroma of a dust covered card catalog reminds of a time when reading new books was a weekly rewarding experience. My fifth grade teacher created chants, distributed stickers, and rewarded us with sweet treats as we approached library day. She created a momentum that carried my love for reading all the way through college.
The Principles of Critical Literacy was developed in 2004, by McLaughlin and DeVoogd. It includes various means of understanding the relationship between the reader and the author. It is made by Freire 's suggestion that reading is intertwined with knowledge. Critical literacy is deeper than just decoding words, it is about connecting knowledge. Freire thinks the reader should ask themselves what the author is trying to get across and how he/she is getting the message across to the audience reading.
Literacy Autobiography My earliest memories I have about reading are in my first grade classroom. Till this day I consider my 1st grade teacher the best teacher I ever had. She was an incredible lady that did all she could to make all her students successful. In first grade was when I was introduced to many enjoyable books at first I really didn’t like reading but, then the pictures and all the illustrations in general would grab my attention and I was anxious to finish the book. In my elementary years I remember having a reading class called S.F.A (Success for All).
Literacy is the ability to gather, process and utilise information to effectively understand situations. Literacies encompass a range of different areas, such as numeracy and digital technology, not just reading and writing. They are the key to using different information to make sense of a range of materials associated with varying contexts and are vital in effective communication. As a current University of Tasmania student, I understand how important literacies are and am eager to build and extend my knowledge as a pre-service teacher.
My literacy journey of learning English began when I was in grade 2. I moved from South Korea to Canada knowing just basic Letter sounds. At my first elementary school in Vancouver, I was placed in the ESL program where they tested my English level and helped me improve my literacy skills according to my English proficiency. At the age of 7, I was in preschool level English and my ESL teacher highly recommended me to get a tutor. When my parents saw how much I was struggling at school, my parents decided to take me to the English after school program.
Critical literacy is an approach based on which students learn how to effectively analyze texts and use strategies in order to locate words and understand hidden messages. Janks states that "critical literacy resists definition because power manifests itself differently in different contexts and at different historical moments. "(Janks, 2010, p.40) What's more, an emphasis is put on the contrast between language and power and the shifts critical literacy undergoes due to technological evolution. Thus, the only part that remains unchangeable is "its social justice agenda and its commitment to social action."
