My adventure to world of literacy
Literacy is the ability to do something and do it well…making extraordinary difference and flourishing lives. Literacy has a much broader meanings than just the ability of a person to read and write. Literacy doesn’t even necessarily require the ability to read and write. To me literacy is the ability of a person not only to read and write, but also being able to understand, perceive the value of the information and put it into use. Ones’s caliber of literacy determines Personal and economic freedoms. Based on my experience Literacy translates to being an expert in particular subject or aspects of life. My dad is one of the many people in my life that have a colossal impact on my literacy. He was a self-made person who believes 100 % and more in a power of literacy. My dad studied military science, but to everybody that knows him, he is also a chemist, a physicist, a biologist, a linguistic, a history guru and absolute geography maniac and that is all because of his relentless reading habits. The love of reading instilled in all of us his children because of his passion and appreciation for his books. He played remarkable contributions to my literacy and how I value the importance of it.
My heritage and where I grow up also another part of me that shaped my literacy. Born and raised in Addis Ababa the capital city of Ethiopia, I learned to speak, read and write the official language of Ethiopia called Amharic. I was taught English as a second language, but we didn’t really encouraged to do a great deal of writing at school. The school curriculum is mostly designed around learning how to read and speak. I am expected to speak in a certain tone and compelled to think twice about what I read and write. In my household mom had definitely been the one to teach us gender role and what society anticipates of us all. From an early age my mom taught me what a woman supposed to be like, as her mom taught her. My brothers definitely have had much more freedom in their literacy than us the girls. I was always taught not to speak as much, which impacted my literacy in speech and writing. Growing up voicing my opinion was an intimidating concept. Now I strongly believe and fully understand the value of having an opinion and how that helps foster my literacy in every possible
