"I see the eight of us with our "Secret Annex" as if we were a little piece of blue heaven, surrounded by heavy black rain clouds. Now we are so surrounded by danger and darkness that we bump against each other, as we search desperately for a means of escape. . . [The clouds] stand before us as an impenetrable wall; it tries to crush us, but cannot do so yet. I can only cry out and implore: 'Oh, I feel only the black circle could recede and open way for us!'" (Anne Frank). Anne writes in her diary about how she is feeling about her current situation. This quote demonstrates that during this part of the diary Anne is pessimistic about her chances of survival. She thinks that eventually they will be caught and wants to know when that will happen to her and her family. In the quote, Anne uses metaphors to describe the situation she is in and that is mostly because of how much she loves nature. In the metaphor, her family and everyone else in the annex are being surrounded by dark clouds, which represent the Nazis. Some nights she hears bombs that are being dropped in the Netherlands that might help her escape. At this moment in time, she feels as if her chances of survival are very slim, and that their doom shortly awaits them. Also, Anne says that they are so surrounded that they bump into each other, and by that she means that they have to hide in the annex. The only way for them to stay alive in the Netherlands is if they hide away from the Nazis and the Gestapo. This quote is very significant to the diary because it displays how Anne can write using metaphors and that she can have some intelligence behind her thoughts.
