In 2023 there are so many controversial topics, but have you ever stopped to think about whether virtual stealing is a serious crime? Probably not. In Alex Weiss’s essay, Should Gamers Be Prosecuted for Virtual Stealing, he argues that gamers should not face prosecution for virtual stealing. Weiss begins this essay by providing us with information about a real case of prosecution due to virtual stealing. He then uses his personal experiences and knowledge of various games to help the audience visualize video games as escapism. Finally, he provides his audience with real life examples of rules and policies from different video games. Weiss makes two points in his essay: video games aren’t investments, and video games are escapism. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, he goes against his first point about video games not being investments. He then continues to counteract his argument by talking about his personal experiences investing time in gaming. This essay lacks a logical argument. There are very few claims that include reasoning. While this essay provides lots of information about his experiences, there are no statistics or strong evidence to back up his points. This would be a stronger essay if he added these things that he is missing. For example, if he could add some statistics about how many people use video games as an escape or about virtual stealing, then this would be a stronger argument. The reality of this essay is that there is none of that. Throughout this essay, the author also provides no counterarguments, which this paper would greatly benefit from. There are many misconceptions about video games, so the reader may not understand as much. However, if their misconceptions were debunked, the reader might be more open-minded. For example, some people might think that virtual stealing is dangerous and should be taken more seriously, so the author could explain why that is not the reality of it.
