View on Video Games Mathew Walther comes out with a very bold and strong statement claiming that he has an issue with what the nerd culture has become. When Matthew Walther published his article “Sorry Nerds: Video Games Are Not a Sport” he tries to explain in a variety of different ways how video games aren’t a true sport; yet proceeds to use the reference that watching CNN with your grandpa could be a sport biased on his definition of a sport. With the way the author is trying to describe how he doesn’t think video games are a sport to his audience he leaves out some key things. He then contradicts himself saying that people can make a money from them as well. That can go for anything though to be able to make money you have to spend money. Almost all companies take risks on big investments to receive big clients. Matthew Walther complains that colleges are spending too much money on starting new programs that have no benefit to anyone. He doesn’t think it is validated for a college to spend half a million dollars to start these programs for something that doesn’t fit in his definition of a sport. When he states this, it shows his bias because he doesn’t give a true dictionary definition of a sport just his opinion on what he thinks is a sport. Everyone has an opinion of what a sport is. But Walther wrote about how these games lack the physical sports aspects which can create a misleading representation to others who might think video games are a sport. This is because he doesn’t believe it is justified that, “Hundreds of millions of dollars are being made streaming video games on the internet” (195), when no physical exertion is performed. He didn’t validate how the nerd culture is changing and he thought it should’ve stayed the same as it used to be for the benefit of kids. This created a challenge for some to read since some people love video games. With Walther’s closed mindset he doesn’t show fair viewpoints to both sides of the benefits of the new changes in the gaming world. He points his article to appeal to the moms that don’t like their kids playing video games. Which is smart if that’s his goal, but it didn’t really seem like that was his goal. It seemed like he was targeting a larger audience to help them understand that he wants to enhance colleges instead of demoting them with his belief that video games aren’t a sustainable sport. He is using the facts that he knows is true that colleges are spending more than an ordinary amount of money to create video game scholarships to help kids that need the money. He has good motivation saying that he doesn’t want to see so many kids playing video games all day every day and he wants to get them to go out and do other things. Which as a society we could all do better with, as an individual with social media, being able to get aways from a screen and do something physical is a very powerful feeling that most people can agree on. He would have gotten a more positive reaction to his article if he would have
