V. Tangled Nathan Greno and Byron Howard’s film, Tangled, employs height as a device of security in life. A magical golden flower is found high on the cliff which has the ability to give eternal youth and healing. This represents insurance that there is no fear of death so long as the flower is in the affected individual’s possession. Rapunzel obtains the power of the magical flower in her hair, and her home is moved to a colossal tower where she retains the power of giving eternal youth and healing. In “Mother Knows Best”, Mother Gothel, Rapunzel’s “mother”, sings, “You know why we stay up in this tower, that’s right, to keep you safe and sound” (00:13:01-00:13:10). Flynn is chased by the kingdom’s guards and horses. To escape the wardens, Flynn runs into the majestic grove and seeks refuge up Rapunzel’s tall tower. This succeeds in giving him refuge and safety from those who are following him. Additionally, a romance between Rapunzel and Flynn occurs on the ground. In said relationship, the characters become more vulnerable and enter unchartered territory; thus showing insecurity because they are both unsure of their trust and feelings in one another. At the end of the movie, Rapunzel returns to her birth family, the king and queen, with Flynn Rider. She is safe from the evils of Mother Gothel in the ending scene of a family hug high in their castle. The castle’s stature gives Rapunzel her ultimate protection with her true family and love. In the 1800s, the North and South split over civil rights, specifically slavery. In the North, African Americans had a harbor and protection from servitude. The South, however, put many African Americans to work in the form of slavery, which often resulted in physical and mental harm. At the lower latitude, the South caused the Civil War, proving a loss of control over their situation. This war signified a loss of safety. Many of the most grueling and gory battles were fought further down in the South, which implies the further one goes down, the less amount of security. Additionally, the South as a region of the United States is located closer towards the equator and warmer oceans. This provides a greater probability of environmental threats.
