Bravery and the value of friendships are two memorable traits that many people lack.’Malice’ by Chris Wooding is a novel that includes graphic novel themes to create an impactful story. Some of the main themes of ‘Malice’ are friendship and bravery. One of the main characters, Seth, is especially memorable for these traits. ‘Malice’ is a novel that includes graphic novel themes to create an impactful story. From when the reader is first introduced to him, Seth impulsively makes reckless decisions, even after being warned by his best friend Kady. Deciding that he wants to climb a cliff without safety gear, Seth nearly gets himself killed. Seth’s constant recklessness might be caused by his fear of growing up and becoming like his parents, who he describes as “boring” and “lifeless”. “Do you want to end up like your parents? Going to work, coming home, watching TV ‘til you go to bed? Where’s the fun in that?” (page 18). The author’s intention of this quote is to show that Seth’s adventurous nature stems from his fear of becoming his like his parents. Seth runs away to Malice by himself because he needs to know whether Luke (his friend) is dead. Seth writes Kady an email before he leaves, and in this, he says “I can’t go on not knowing. If I’m not here in the morning then Malice is real and that means Luke is dead” (page 95). Kady gets annoyed that he leaves without her, but it’s obvious that Seth has good intentions This shows that Seth is willing to sacrifice himself for the opportunity to save his friend, meaning that Seth cares a lot about his friend’s safety (maybe doesn’t value his parents as much as his friends). This is an interesting and memorable part of Seth’s personality because although Seth cares a lot about his friends, sometimes he does (bad) things to try and protect
