Vince Lombardi once said, “If you can’t accept losing, you can’t win”. In The Wave, a social experiment based on ideals of the Nazi Party was conducted by the Gordon High School students. This experiment actually proved Lombardi’s quote to be true. The Gordon High School students who were a part of the wave were viewed as the “winners” in this novel, and the “losers” were those students not committed to the wave. The members of the wave did not accept the other students who were not associated with the wave. Members of the wave even went so far as to harass and abuse the students not devoted to their movement. Whenever I have lost, I always find myself questioning what I did wrong, or how I should do it next time. When I was younger, I lost a cash-prize fishing tournament because of poor time management. I had yet to learn that when a fish is caught and taken out of the water it begins to lose weight immediately. Rather than leave my fish in a bucket of water and take it to the weigh-in station as soon as I caught it, I chose to continue fishing to try to catch an even larger fish. My fish was losing weight with each additional cast, and I being oblivious of it, just kept fishing and ended up losing. From this I learned the importance of time management, a lot like Robert from The Wave. Robert was a social outsider before joining the wave, but once he got involved with the wave he started to change for what he thought was for the better. He started to see the importance managing his time so that he could continue to do better. Robert realized in order to do more and fit in with the “winners” he had to give himself more time to get ready and actually complete his assignments. David, Laurie’s boyfriend, has his outlook completely changed as the experiment progresses. At the beginning of the story, David embraces the wave because of its potential benefits for the football team. David also influenced other people to join because of its seemingly positive effects. Later on, however, he started to see other students get overly protective of the wave. After his girlfriend, Laurie, threatened to post the article about a student getting bullied for not being in the wave; Brad, Robert, and David decided to take action themselves. David’s actions actually caused him to shove Laurie over the anti-wave article, which lead him to think that being in the wave was not worth him losing control of
