In the article ‘Why Bother?’ Michael Pollan, a Professor of Journalism at the University of California, examines the dangers of climate change and how ordinary citizens can reduce its effects on the environment. Although most scientists are concerned and have warned nations of its disastrous effects some still deny the existence of climate change. As if melting ice caps and the ever-increasing blue waters were not enough proof, some citizens believe that climate change is an “unproven theory or a negligible contribution to natural climate variability” (Hall 3). Nevertheless, citizens who believe in global warning can change how they live for the better.
Hi Classmate, To be honest with you, after reading this article and the other so far in this class, this presidential administration has really touched a nerve. I think our policymakers have set out to confuse the public and it has become a battle over climate science. Through this battle, Scientists and journalists have decided to go straight to the public, whereas before they would go straight to the politicians in a straighter formal format. Justin Gillis's article in the New York Times, “Climate Change Is Complex. We’ve Got Answers to Your Questions” is an example of striving to create a simplified way of explaining global climate change to the public, because the science community is having to climb over mountains that President Trump and his administration have created.
In history, it is evident that Imperialism has direct implications of industrial advancement; however, when discussing the topic of moral stature, it is clear that imperialism is a damaging force. Document 1, document 2, and document 7 all discuss the industrial aspect of imperialism. Document 1, written by Parker T. Moore, a white man, talks about exporters and manufacturers. Moore states that colonial markets require political control and imperialism to thrive. The British come in and set up their markets, pushing the natives away.
The human race has taken the planet under our control, but now we must keep the peace with the environment on which we so heavily depend--this is a crucial part of Elizabeth Kolbert’s main argument in her book Field Notes from a Catastrophe. However, while scientific evidence, climate models, and visible effects of global warming all work together in presenting a sound case for political action to be taken against further warming, there is a noticeable lack of actual policy-making. Kolbert points out that both the Clinton Administration and the Bush Administration failed to treat global warming as a political issue of top priority. Similarly, Fred Powledge highlights in his article “Scientists, Policymakers, and a Climate of Uncertainty” that current government officials continue to publicly question the validity of scientific evidence that proves human activity has directly affected the progression of climate change and actively cease to support legislation that works to mitigate further warming. While the majority of scientists agree that global warming is escalating at an unprecedented rate due to human activity, both Kolbert and Powledge agree that many politicians have yet to treat climate change as a serious issue that demands immediate action, and point out that some refuse to admit that it is even an
This Changes Everything is a documentary that was released in 2015 as a companion project to Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs The Climate. Naomi Klein is a Canadian author, social activist and filmmaker, widely known for her criticism of globalization and capitalism. The documentary explores the premise of environmental destruction from groups and companies partaking in globalization and capitalism. Klein makes the argument that corporations will mercilessly exploit resources, regardless of emotional and social impact.
The text's meanings and purpose are climate change labels, the climate change debate, and the ‘science’ surround climate change. Moreover, in comprehending implicit-purpose, the text leans in favoring climate change. The text provides cynical adjectives in associating the term “deniers.” Words like “manipulating data,” “phony skeptics,” “ludicrous claims,” “cherry-picking,” and “Holocaust” are used relating to
For example, in the months before the EPA announced its repeal of the Obama administration’s central carbon pollution-reduction policy in October 2017, references to climate change were wiped from many of its websites and climate scientists were reassigned to new departments (Water, 2018).” Much like in Fahrenheit 451, society is censored from information in this case global warming. Climate change activists are plagued
By the year 2025 100% of our nation's power will come either directly from the sun or from clean renewable resources like wind and geothermal or fusion. We commit the United States to this endeavor because we choose to take responsibility for the future of this magnificent planet we share with all the great nations of the earth. The earth's climate is undeniably changing at an unprecedented rate, and the rate and extent of this change will affect us all, and will cause—and is already causing—extreme hardship on those least able to adapt. There is also no doubt that human activity is responsible for this rapid rate of climate
Climate change is an occurrence that has caused much debate
Science is a controversial topic that has been debated as early as people started to question what humans know about the world. Even today many debate science, and the topic of climate change and this debate goes back to the 20th century where trailblazers tried to wake the public up to the world around them. Science is about evidence, so the fact that it became a political debate is an irrational development. Rachel Carson, a trailblazer of the 20th century, shook the world with her research awakening the American people, stood against all odds, and contributed to today’s society. Rachel Carson was a researcher and was infatuated with nature and very troubled by the damage done by man.
Climate change is one among the most daunting threat to the environment today. It threatens not only the degradation of our health and environment, but it also impends to destroy the global economy and political security. In the United States, there are many steps taken to combat the threat caused by climate change. However, in the book entitled This Changes Everything, the author, Naomi Klein proposed that the attempt to work against climate change will surely fail, unless people will unite into a common understanding that it is a “part of a much broader battle of world views” (Klein 397). Further, while some people believe that there is no way to solve the current problem of climate change, the author suggested otherwise.
I agree, it is factual that we are facing severe environmental challenges. Even if the skeptics do not believe in the global warming, it is undeniable that the air and water pollution are caused by human activities. It is unhelpful to argue who is right, who gets more evidences or who eventually wins. If people just ignore the negative environmental impacts and do not implement any practical plans to deal with, our future generation will definitely suffer from
In fact, denying climate change will only harm society and the Earth further; because by denying it, those who deny climate change are willingly aiding the damage and the danger climate change brings. Climate change is denied is due to the prioritization of business and the economy. Large corporations create their products with uncostly materials, in order to profit more, and those materials are more-often-than-not non-renewable resources or cause damage to the Earth. These corporations prefer to not be targeted with accusations of the unethical damage they are causing. Therefore, they create propaganda against climate change, they create doubt among their customers.
Climate Change is one of the most unsettling problems mankind faces today. It leaves an impact on every single living thing, on every continent, no matter the privilege. Long term investment must be used to change the world. People must do more than just change out their light bulbs for eco-friendly ones, or drive fuel efficient cars. A choice as simple as changing our diets could reduce a human’s carbon footprint by fifty percent.
One of the greatest issues that we face towards the environment has been an increasingly difficult problem over the last few years. Earths climate is changing at rapid paces and solutions are needed as quickly as possible to replenish natural ecosystems and cultures that depend on the environment. Climate change not only affects the animals in our ecosystem, but us humans as well. With the human population increasing every year, climate change is only getting worse. Many argue that the effects of climate change towards the environment are due to other extraneous factors, however, I myself am a strong believer that the problems such as rising sea levels, warmer temperatures and natural disasters are all due to both natural causes and human activity.
