Police brutality has become a very controversial topic in the United States over the past few years. The book All American Boys written by Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds, tells the perspectives of two high school boys from Springfield and how police brutality has impacted their lives. His best friends are English, Shannon, and Carlos.
All children are different so it is the parent’s responsibility to determine whether or not their children can handle the different media. Some media critics believe that violent cartoons, video games, movies etc. are good for children. Gerard Jones gives an example in his essay “Violent media is good for kids” which he explains how violent media can be good for children, Jones explains his point by giving an example of his son. Jones tells how he exposed his son to marvel comics which helped him in his kindergarten experience. The marvel characters gave Jones’s son the desire of “transforming himself into a bloodthirsty dinosaur to embolden himself for the plunge into preschool” (373).
All American Boys is a gripping and thought provoking book that explores issues of police brutality, racism, and social justice in America through the perspective of two teenagers Rashad Butler and Quinn Collins. Rashad is a sixteen year old african american who is brutally beaten by a white police officer while Quinn a white classmate of Rashad is a witness of the assault. The story follows their intertwined stories as they deal with their respective identities, beliefs, and responsibilities in the aftermath of Rashad's assault. Taking everything into account, the article "Brutality is Good for Kids" by Gerald Jones is a to a great extent misdirecting bit of composing that ruptures the societal standards and moral living. There is no watertight proof that can influence any rational personality to take after that course. Utilizing his own experience alone is an exhibition that the conclusion which the creator came to radiated from a base of learning inadequacy. Wonder Comics can 't be the main type of savage media. There are numerous others, which have exceptionally negative impacts; the small enlivening angle ought not befuddle anybody to hold such a solid battle to support them.
In the book " Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City" written by Dr. Elijah Anderson, The William K. Lanman Jr. Professor of Sociology at Yale, brings to light the different issues that are regular in the city today. The street codes have a huge influence on the activities and conduct of numerous young people in the inner city or "hood". In the streets, it is stressing, as it is credited to ills like expanded rate of crime, anxiety, drug trafficking and all manifestations of brutality with extreme aftereffect of death. The urban life inside the ghettos majorly pitched into the street codes. Plainly, he brings out the issue of respect.
Mrs. Smith English 111 Jan. 28, 2023 Rhetorical analysis: “Legal system has never had an answer for violent kids” In this article, the author, Stephen L. Carter, goes into detail on the reasons why the legal system is confused or conflicted on whether they should or shouldn’t charge young children below the age of 10 for their crimes. This article is somewhat controversial because of the recent case that happened in Virginia with the 6-year-old, but he uses this to his advantage to get his point across and to try and shed some light on the way the justice system has and continues to handle these cases in the past. Not only is the topic something controversial, but his opinion on what they could do and how to solve it is also controversial.
The shift of violence is motivated by a historical shift that has resulted in the decrease of violence globally. This can be explained in Chapter 3: The Civilizing Processes in the book, The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined by Steven Pinker that discusses the trend of violence through the introduction of centralized power, etiquette and the economic revolution. Medieval Europe as indicated by the drawing of figure 3.6 depicted a very violent Europe. A knight would cut off the nose of a civilian as an official punishment for “hearsay, treason, prostitution or sodomy, but usually due to personal vengeance” (Pinker. 2011, p. 68).
Despite these few instances of violence, the novel cannot be compared to movies or graphics that adolescents are exposed to today. Due to lessened parental supervision “the typical American child will view more than 200,000 acts of violence, including more than 16,000 murders before age 18. Television programs display 812 violent acts per hour; children's programming, particularly cartoons, displays up to 20 violent acts hourly” (Beresin). If adolescents are already unsheltered from this brutality, then they should also be allowed to
What is Jones’s thesis? Restate it in your own words. Jones’s thesis is that, it’s helped hundreds of people for everyone it’ hurt, and that our fear if youth violence isn’t well-founded on reality, and that the fear can do more harm than the reality. This statement is saying that violence helps people just as much as it can hurt people. He is also saying that people have developed an irrational fear or violence, and fearing violence is more harmful than violence itself.
The readings and discussion on the differences between schools and prisons has again challenged my understanding of the purpose and function of schools. The Real School Safety Problem by Aron Kupchik, Kiera Wilmot's "School-to-Prison Pipeline" TedTalk, and the Spencer Foundation YouTube video on How out-of-school suspension impacts your future all shed light on how schools can become sites of punishment and incarceration, rather than education and growth. In The Real School Safety Problem, Kupchik argues that the emphasis on school safety has led to increased surveillance and policing of students, which can lead to a prison-like atmosphere in schools. This shift towards punitive measures has resulted in the criminalization of minor offenses such as tardiness, dress code violations, and talking back, which can result in suspensions, expulsions, and even arrests due to zero-tolerance policies.
David Grossman’s interview expresses his argument against violent video games. I agreed with many of Grossman’s arguments again these video games; however, he also mad points that I disagree with. Grossman argues that many video games are too violent to place in the hands of children, which I strongly agree with. I also agree that education is an extremely important factor in stopping the influence of violent video games because society needs to be educated about the potential dangers of violent video games. I agree with Grossman’s point that it is the parent's job to prevent their children from playing violent video games; however, I do not believe that companies producing these games should be sued.
Analysis of Gerard Jones’ “Violent Media is Good for Kids” In the article called “Violent Media is Good for Kids,” by Gerard Jones, a renowned comic- book author, is arguing that violent media can be helpful for children, rather than be overly harmful. Parents aren’t taking the time to really look at how helpful violent content could possibly be for their child. Yet, violence can help children learn how to reach for their own inner power that they may have never been able to find before. Furthermore, children as they grow up may even go towards violence that presents justice, rather than the negative types of violence.
Media violence has become a controversial topic in the world today. Owing to the rising technology, children are beginning to show increasing violent behaviors. The debates on the effects of media ranging from screen media, video games, and books have a long history. Due to this, there is a speculation over what is the leading cause of the increasing violence in children. Some people argue that there is a relationship between media violence and real-life violence.
