He wants people to avoid thinking that developing only one true self identity is healthy. A mask allows an individual to see his or her full potential by not having a true identity. Masks have multiple identities based on the certain situations and environments (circumstances) the person is having(undergoing). I agree with Gergens interpretation (assertion) and his psychological
Everyone pretends to be something they’re not, but the true colors reveal who they are or what they want. As humans, we do this in order to keep life as simple as possible, but it is an undeniable fact that there is more to us than what meets the eye. “In the beginning, some people try to appear that everything about them is "in black and white," until later their true colors come out.” This is a wise quote by a man of the name Anthony Liccione. He is an American writer who produces books, but people know him for his sophisticated yet simple quotes.
The novel To Kill A Mockingbird exposes the reality behind the mask that people wear to protect themselves from ideas and thoughts that they have but don’t want to accept because they are scared to be vulnerable to society and possibly themselves. Throughout Harper Lee’s creation, though the mask is not directly shown or stated, it is implied in many situations. Maycomb county wears a mask that narrows their vision so they are unable to see other people’s side of things. The upper class white families in Maycomb are the most prone to this mask regarding to the fact everyone is below them, especially the black community.
People act differently when they are with certain people than when they are alone. Some will call this act a “mask.” This metaphor is used because people cover up who they truly are or what they really feel with their actions; similar to the way a mask covers up a person’s face. This idea of a mask is explored in Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poem, “We Wear the Mask” and readers can see examples of “masks” in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. People often wear masks to hide something about themselves that they are not proud of or hide their emotions and fears they do not want others to know.
Society molds human identity. In the satire Feed by M.T Anderson, technological advances have robbed the characters of their individuality. Differences are frowned upon in Titus' society. As a result, all the characters have become sheep and just follow the trend. They alter themselves and their interests to follow society’s standards.
Hiding underneath a mask as if you were someone new, is well worth it. What mask are you hiding under? “Swear this one you’ll save” Would you trust the person beside you? Even if we trust a few with our secrets, how long will it take until they spill? “The Wife’s Story” the husband couldn't hold it in anymore and wanted to tell his family the truth, not knowing that when the truth could end up getting him killed.
Forrest Gump takes place in modern history of the United States, emphasizing race relations between blacks and whites, disability and southern culture. Beginning in the south during the 1950’s, the movie highlights segregation, and ends with the way African-Americans are portrayed today. Forrest Gump begins with the main character sitting at a bus stop, and it isn’t until Forrest speaks that the audience realizes he has a disability. Throughout the movie Forrest is portrayed as a simple, white southern male from Alabama who has a below average intelligence. The movie takes places during a significant era between the 1950 's and 1980’s, and recalls different events of Forrest’s life, underlining how he surpasses the expectations society had for him.
The poem We Wear the Mask generalizes that everyone has on a disguise that projects them in a better light to hide uglier deeper truths, but what it doesn’t say is words can do that
Duality. The Unseen Side of Everything. Many people can agree with the fact that society can be a controlling, manipulative beast. It’s hand persistently reaches out and drags unsuspecting victims into depths known as conformity. Over time, many people develop masks of their own to hide from this beast and to be seen as a typical and average person.

Appearances are masks “Your appearance can be a weapon. As powerful as any knife or gun,” -Barbra Appearance is a very strong weapon that can tear countries apart. One person pretending or saying they are someone else when they aren’t could destroy and deceive nations. The novel The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a murder mystery in the late 1800’s, as Sherlock and his companion Dr. Watson travel to a dangerous moor in search of the rumored hound of Baskervilles, they find out who or what killed the former owner of the mansion, Sir Charles. While they are there, some of the suspects are very crafty and deceive everyone of their appearances.
However, when people finally listen to their own thoughts, they can find that the thought differ greatly to the majority. By thinking independent, people become aware of themselves, and their own emotions. Going through with a mask on is not truly living. It is important for people to understand realize how they really feel and if that is not how the majority for people are, then so be it. People, government, and the world in general will always be feeding its population lies.
While reading The Secret Sharer, I saw many parallels between the struggles the two main characters faced and the idea of “passing” and putting on a masquerade to mask who you really are. In our society, often times there are disadvantages associated with “coming out”. It used to be that if a black woman with lighter skin “came out” as being black, she would not have the same opportunities as a white woman. If someone in the LGBTQ community “comes out”, they are likely to face prejudice. Although the character in The Secret Sharer, Mr. Leggatt, hides and conceals his identity for his own safety, still today people hide who they are in fear of the possible repercussions affecting their well being.
Going off of Sarah’s response to the answer, I do agree that people in society do conceal themselves on social media to fit in. However, many people also don’t feel the need the disguise themselves in a perfect mask, so they would actually be their true self. Some people are simply confident about who they are; they can do and say without the fear of being judged. It can also be believed that people who are among the upper class of society may actually live a life close to a utopian society because they don’t have to worry about money because they can possess all the luxury they want. On the other hand, it is nearly impossible for this world to come close to a dystopia because humans are created and born with flaws.
Society has made you believe that you yourself are not worthy enough for beautiful women That’s simply it! That’s the entire frame behind all the pick up lines, all the PUA techniques, books, boot camps, etc. Think about it!
