The novel, Something Wicked, by Alan Gratz takes place on Birnam Mountain near Knoxville, Tennessee. The author, Alan Gratz, actually grew up in Knoxville Tennessee. During this time, there is a Scottish Highland Fair going on along with the Highland Games. The characters are linked to the setting because they all have Scottish backgrounds. The setting of the story influences the events in the novel with its historic background.
There are many metaphors in the story that the animalistic nature shows such as when Jurgis finds out what Conner did to Ona he gets mad and not only does he beat him but he takes a bite out of his cheek. In the book it said it took half a dozen men to pull him off of Conner. When the men finally got him to the floor they had to hold him by his arms and legs, hardly being able to hold him as he fought like a tiger to get free. Some parts to my life can relate to Holden from catcher in the rye to well. In someways I can personally relate to Holden and in other ways Holden can relate to my brother. From the outset, I have to say that “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger has been one of the most important and influential pieces of literature I have ever read. At its core, the book is a superb coming of age novel which discusses several extremely powerful themes such as the difficulties of growing up, teenage angst and alienation and the superficiality, hypocrisy and pretension of the adult world. These themes resonated deeply with me and were portrayed excellently through the use of powerful symbolism and the creation of highly relatable and likable characters. One such character is Holden Caulfield whom the story both revolves around and is narrated by.

The book Divergent, by Veronica Roth helps convey the theme through the story of Tris a sixteen year old girl trying to find what part of society she fits into. Everyone living in this dystopian version of Chicago only belong in one faction however, there are a rare few that may show traits from more than one faction.
In William Shakespeare’s Tragedy “Macbeth” and the well-known comedy story of Lion King, the demise of Ducan, comparing to the death of Mufasa, as well as the consequence of conspiracy and revenge conducted in both stories, are similar. In fact, “The Lion King’s storyline is also influenced by William Shakespeare’s Macbeth” (The Lion King). Both stories contain the plot of seizing the throne by a conspirator, the death of the king, the fleeing of origin descendant of the throne, and a victorious revenge at last. When I first heard about Wicked, I was 14 years old and clueless about the world of musical theatre. It wasn't until the next year when I saw this show live that I had completely been changed for good. As I saw the show just mere months after deciding that I wanted to pursue performance after my O levels, Wicked truly did a number on me. I remember sitting there at the end of act 1 where Elphaba is up in the air belting about how no one is going to stand in her way of chasing her dreams just awestruck during the intermission. I even took my phone out and made a note about how there was truly a difference watching Defying Gravity on a screen and live.
