Prompt: Should Hazen be Allowed to Limit Students' Online Speech

The purpose of a school is to educate students and to prepare them for their upcoming years. It is supposed to be an environment where students can learn valuable skills, as well as grasp a concept on how to tackle the world on their own. How can students learn to face the real world if they’re constantly being babied by their own school? As a senior, and a student of Hazen High School, administration should not limit what students post or say online. Although what people post online is online, it will always find a way to disrupt reality. In addition, the US Department of Education states that, “schools are responsible for addressing harassment incidents about which it knows or reasonably should have known” (Document G). Schools should be a safe place for everyone attending. Regardless of how petty an ignorant or hurtful comment may be online, schools work to create a welcoming environment year round.
