In America during both the time period of 1840s-1850s and 1910s-1920s, resistance to immigrants happened through social and political movements such as the KKK and nativist movements. However, immigrants were more likely to have restrictions in the 1910s-1920s. Also, during the 1910s-1920s people were more afraid that immigrants would change the democracy and bring new ideas of communism in the country. Therefore, these two time periods are more different than similar.

Since the beginning of empires, women were often subservient to men. They were underrepresented in politics, forbidden from education and sometimes even the workplace. Women were expected to be homemakers, raise children and be otherwise obedient. World War II began to change this. As men went to fight, women took up their places in the workforce.
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
Unlike white men, women didn’t even have the right to vote. Most women in this time had a husband that supported her and their family. When married, a women’s "work" life didn't change too much due to the great depression because their duties were inside the home. Women continued to cook, clean, and mend around the house. Although, whenever women did work, they experienced one-quarter less of minimum wage as men performing the same job.
The 1920s was the beginning of a new life for everyone in America, new things people never would have imagined to use in the past were now accessible. Years before,most people used railroads and wagons to get places. Not only that but, society was split between the north and south. Revolving labor, people usually farmed and owned property, but this would soon change. The 1920s came with unexpected turning points, new technological developments, social behavior change, and economic oppurtunities.
