“To S.M a Young African Painter, on Seeing His Works” by Phillis Wheatley, a poem formed using heroic couplets, was published in 1773. This was a time when the colonies were under the reign of the monarchy and the influence of the Pope, and Christianity was still the dominant belief due to the Protestant and Puritan immigrants. In fact, in “To S.M. a Young African Painter, on Seeing His Works” Wheatley admires the African painter’s work by likening it to heaven and to God’s creation. The poem begins by describing the work of the painter as bringing his creation to life.

In "The Count of Monte Cristo" it states,"...and had sent this noise to warn him on the very brink of the abyss. " It also states,"...a ray of something like hope that soothed his last moments. " The author seems to indicate that Edmond was enjoying figuring out what the sound is from and using the noise as a way to not lose his sanity. The author also implies that Edmond thought that the noise was a heaven sent gift that heaven sent because it was taking pity on him.
