In the conclusion of his works, Oates asserts that to many African-Americans, Nathaniel Turner is a heroic figure. Speaking of African-Americans, Oates writes, “....Nathaniel Turner’s rebellion is regarded as the ‘First War’ against slavery and the Civil War as the second. So in death Nathaniel Turner achieved a kind of victory that renounced him in life, he became a martyred soldier of slave liberation who broke his chains and murdered whites because slavery had murdered Negroes...” I do perceive that Oates supports this perspective in his account. I agree that Nathaniel Turner was a freedom fighter even though what we had done was way too extreme. For this interpretation, one does not have to be African American as Oates originally suggested. …show more content…

Nathaniel Turner battled for anti-slavery but also decided to massacre men, women, and children that today’s society it would be considered war crime or terrorism.(Wikipedia)(Answers) Nathaniel Turner witnessed that his fellow slaves were being harshly treated, which led to Nathaniel Turner supposedly witnessing signs that describe to him about his destiny.(Wikipedia) Nathaniel Turner had to stand up and protect himself at the selection available for a slave at the time.(Wikipedia) Nathaniel Turner only spared a few homes “...because Turner believed the poor white inhabitants ‘...thought no better of themselves as the did of negroes.’”(Wikipedia) The way Nathaniel Turner could be perceived as a freedom fighter as someone willing to stand up and make slaveowners suffer wrath for the unacceptable acts that they have carried out upon millions of men, women, and children that were enslaved.(Wikipedia) Historical writer James H.
