In The First Part Last Angela Johnson uses symbols to tell weather or not bobby is coming of age. I think that bobby did come of age and became a man. Some symbols are when he decided to keep feather and he came back for her when he left her when he left her at home when he was on his way to the basketball courts. So here is the story of bobby. It describes to readers how her mother has influenced her life by becoming an admonitory voice inside her head. The impact Young’s mother has on her is widely due to the amount of admiration Young has for her. A crucial element to “The Undercurrent” is the short stories found throughout her narrative that exemplifies the greater concept of how her mother has shaped her life.
In her poem, “Crossing the Swamp,” Mary Oliver uses vivid diction, symbolism, and a tonal shift to illustrate the speaker’s struggle and triumph while trekking through the swamp; by demonstrating the speaker’s endeavors and eventual victory over nature, Oliver conveys the beauty of the triumph over life’s obstacles, developing the theme of the necessity of struggle to experience success. In the story, When a Southern Town Broke a Heart, Jacqueline Woodson uses a variety of symbolism and metaphor to show that when you get wiser, your perception of things change. One example of Woodson conveying this theme is when she writes, “When the deep green beauty revealed my place and time in history and laid claim to that moment all children know, when the tendrils of adulthood move toward us, showing themselves long before we are ready to see.” This quote describes when she realized the nostalgia of her home was masking the bitter and unfortunate side that “adulthood” is showing her. After reading “In Praise of the ‘F’ Word” written by Mary Sherry I can tell you first hand that she did an exceptional job using rhetoric to make the readers believe what she believes. Although she used all three,ethos,logos,and pathos, she mainly used ethos and pathos to not only get her point across but to also persuade the audience. To begin, Mary Sherry used very little logos, but when she did she used it in a very powerful and effective way. In the very first sentence of the speech she says a shocking statistic, “Tens of thousands of eighteen year olds will graduate this year and be handed meaningless diplomas.”

In school, there are always those who do not understand the content in class, but get by with passing grades. In Mary Sherry’s essay, “In Praise of the F Word”, she writes about how in the American school system students get passed along without any consideration for their pace or skill level (Sherry, 564-566). Sherry also discusses how unprepared the American public is after high school and college (Sherry, 564). In, “In Praise of the F word”, Sherry also discusses her own son and one of his experiences in his high school (Sherry, 565). The content of “In Praise of the F word” was very persuasive, as Sherry effectively utilizes the aristotelian appeals.
