Parts to Writing an Argument Essay There are many topics in writing that can be considered an argument. However because there are many different formats of writing some students may not know how to compose an argument. There are also different types of arguments used in writings. Students may not know what an argument in writing is or the parts that are included to fully complete an argument. Most times when people think of the word “argument”, they think of two people screaming and yelling at each other. An argument in writing is when the writer tries to persuade or convince their audience that the argument is either right or wrong (Ramage & Johnson, 2016). In order to consider a subject an argument there must be a set of two or more conflicting assertions, along with the attempt to resolve the problem (Ramage & Jonhson, 2016). An argument can be both a process and product. A process is when two or more groups search for the best result for a problem or question. Lastly, when anyone contributes to the discussion it is considered to be a product. There are several types of arguments, some of which are explicit and implicit (Ramage & Johnson, 2016). Exordium is when the audience’s attention is grabbed by the speaker (Ramage & Johnson, 2016). The narratio provides a background; the prpositio is the thesis or claim of the paper (Ramage & Johnson, 2016). The main part of the argument is called the paritio (Ramage & Johnson, 2016). Confirmatio shows the support of the claim, while the confutatio contradicts and summarize opposite’s views (Ramage & Johnson, 2016).
