Ray Bradbury and “A Sound of Thunder” Prompt

Over the course of history, people have been able to relate to the most common happenings of everyday life and make them come alive in new, fascinating ways. Ray Bradbury, the author of “A Sound of Thunder”, was no different. He was able to take specific occurrences during his life and recreate them to give readers literature that was packed with entertainment, yet full of references to the good and bad of human society. In writing this essay I will analyze the work of Bradbury in order to identify how he was able to relate the real world to his literature in hopes of forming a more informed audience.

These times were great for most, but there were still very real issues that still needed handling, causing major anxiousness around the country. The United States was still fighting segregation within its own boarders and there was a very real threat in regards to the Cold War with the Soviet Union. During the 1950’s, Ray Bradbury authored, “A Sound of Thunder”, which was a science fiction angle on what was happening in society during that time. In the story, the author was able to exemplify the characteristics and the attitude during the 1950’s in that he created a setting in which time travel was an option of leisure and sport. He made audiences realize that anything was possible, whether that were in the past or “in the now”, for lack of a better phrase. The prominent setting of the story was a time where people had the right politicians in office and the correct decisions were being made in an effort to preserve a stable, functioning society.
