Thus accumulating contradicting interpretations of his reign and effect on Egyptian society. Eberhard Otto stating that “Akhenaten destroyed much, he created little… whatever else he may have been, was no intellectual heavyweight”. Others claim he was “the worlds first idealist… and individual”. Accentuated by his iconoclastic religious reformation and relocation of Egypt’s capital city.
The land along the Nile and delta was arable and very good for farming, while the rest of the land was dry like a desert. (Document 2-1) So, the land near the Nile became the perfect environment for a civilization to commence. Although the Nile floods provided silt, allowing crops to grow, the floods also destroyed villages and killed many people. Despite this, so much success was found in Egypt because of Nile River.
With the rivers located just by ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, both civilizations’ culture depended on agriculture, and were formed around agricultural communities which supplied them with food. In Egypt, the annual flooding of the Nile contributed to their development in agriculture, while Mesopotamians depended on the Euphrates river, which was less dependable than the Nile because of its unpredictable flooding. The flooding of the two rivers in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia left a fertile layer of soil, making it easier to plant crops and allowing both communities to depend on their rivers for
In response to the change in their environment when the floods came, during the season the Egyptian’s called akhet – the inundation - the Egyptians believed that the Nile gave them everything, including the ability to make the floods come. The Egyptians welcomed the change in seasons, because they had confidence that what the Nile took away, it would also give back. The Nile would provide for everything, including watering their crops. Jessica, I want to start by saying I have so much respect for the fact that you really took the time to consider your answer and go with the less popular choice. Unfortunately, I have to disagree. I looked up Western Civilization to see what exactly the phrase refers to and found that it is used to refer to the modern culture of western Europe and North America1 . I agree that the Egyptians had a great impact on the world, but I believe the ideals of the Hebrew civilization had a greater impact on Western Civilization specifically. Not all people practice Christianity or Judaism, but their ideals, such as respect for women and equal treatment of all people, are universal to our society no matter what religion a person may claim.
The exaggeration and fantasization of certain histories has always been prevalent in Western society, however, nothing comes quite as close to being as diluted as the history of ancient Egypt. On a fundamental level, this phenomenon can be defined as Egyptomania: an obsessive interest by Westerners in ancient Egyptian culture, especially during the 19th century. While there is a lot of literature pertaining to Egyptomania in American culture, there is far less that addresses its impact on late 19th century British culture. Though the initial ancient Egyptian archaeological discoveries occurred during the time of Napoleon’s campaigns, most notably the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799, the early 19th century in Britain did not see the same spark in Egyptomania as the late 19th century. This, no doubt, is related to the period of time that Great Britain occupied Egypt.

For most people, Ancient Egyptian Art is immediately recognizable because of the consistent style; both the Egyptian Empire and its art style persisted for close to three thousand years with very few changes. Ancient Egypt had many conventions regulating the way in which figures, especially of powerful people, were depicted. Idealized proportions, symbols of status, and expensive materials aided artisans in their quest to represent the ideals of power and divinity. During the Late Period, the Egyptians created many works of art despite being faced with political threats from foreign invaders. James Allen and Marsha Hill, in their essay “Egypt in the Late Period (ca.
