Ancient India

Ancient India played a very important role. One of their greatest accomplishments was founding the education system and discovering the number system. The first education system was founded by Ancient India and it was called Vedic system of education.

Being well educated was a priority in Ancient Indian culture because he who is possessed of supreme knowledge by concentration of mind, must have his senses under control. Self-discipline and good morals were important.

There are nine fundamentals of Ancient Indian education:
Developing the wholesome personality-Moral strength and moral excellence were developed to the fullest extent

The use of symbolic forms in India is as old as the Harappan seals. The fire altars of the Vedic period with their astronomical and mathematical significance also play an important role in the evolution of the later temples. It was followed by a period in history of Indian art is important for rock-cut caves and temple architecture. Buddhists initiated the rock-cut caves and Hindus and Jains started to imitate them. They were skilled in pottery, weaving, and metalworking.

Getting into religion, the predominant religion in ancient India was Hinduism. The roots of Hindu religion can be traced back to the Vedic period. Hinduism is believed to be the oldest of the major religions and originated in northern India. Early Aryan or Vedic culture was the early Hinduism whose interactions with non-Aryan cultures resulted in what we call Classical Hinduism.

The ancient Indians ate a diet of mostly wheat, barley, vegetables, fruits, meats, and dairy products. Archaeologists have found fishing nets and hooks in the ruins of early civilizations showing that they liked to catch and eat fish. But there are some foods and spices that they particularly favored; for instance, Cinnamon was a popular spice used. It not only tasted great, but it helps to preserve food as well. Like cinnamon and sugar, Indian people have been using black pepper for a very long time. Farmers began growing it around three thousand BC. Also, lentils are actually the seeds of small bushes. People have been eating lentils since about ten thousand BC and it is one of the earliest known crops.

What we know about the Ancient Indians is very little but what we know is fascinating. In 1922, archaeologists found something very interesting. They found the remains of an ancient city called Harappa. It was estimated the population was around 35,000 people. The houses were one or two stories high made of baked brick, with flat roofs. Each was built around a courtyard with windows overlooking the courtyard. Clay pipes drained into near by rivers and streams. The civilization was very advanced.

Men and women dressed in colorful robes. The women wore jewelry of gold and precious stone. Among the treasures found was a statue of a woman wearing a bracelet. Bracelets with similar designs are worn today in modern
