Debate, Innovation, and Exploration: Should we compromise our morals to honor the vast discoveries made during the Age of Exploration? This is one of the most controversial topics, to this day. Centuries later, we are still debating the morality of this era. The Age of Exploration was a time of major discoveries, but it was also marked by the horrific treatment of indigenous people, which created a lot of debate. However, can we truly label this period as good or bad? There are both positive and negative effects of the Age of Exploration. Sea travel became more accessible once they were able to navigate more of the world. The spread of goods and ideas helped generate cultural diffusion. Cultural diffusion is the spread of ideas from one culture to another. With more and more movement, people are learning more about other cultures and the goods they can provide. Cultural diffusion is one of the most important aspects of a society because it is very rare for something in a culture to be completely new. Often, a culture is a combination of different aspects of society around the world. Global Trade normalized cultural diffusion and was one of the very first breakthroughs in the spread of goods and ideas. One example of global trade is the Spice Trade. The spice trade took place throughout the 15th century when Europeans were exploring India for the first time. Columbus’ goal to get to India was not uncommon. Vasco de Gama was the first European to reach India. India is home to many different spices, such as pepper, ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, cumin, and cloves.
