The Age of Exploration time period was not in the Native Americans’ favor. The Native Americans were conquered, and it brought many new diseases and ideas. This caused a significant decline in their population. The Age of Exploration created suffering for Native Americans because of conquests, disease, and refusal to convert to Catholicism. Conquests were a main reason for the suffering of Native Americans. During the Spanish Conquest the Native Americans were suffering from ineffective weapons as their “shields were [their] protection but not even with shields could [they] defend [themselves],” (Doc. 3. These diseases are very malignant and leave many dead. The diseases that came among the Native Americans were, “a great sickness. killing vast numbers of people”(Doc.2). The diseases did not kill only a few people, the “diseases killed possibly more than three-quarters of the native peoples,”(world civilizations,800). As you can see, these diseases were very ruthless and killed almost all of the Native Americans. Finally, the horrid consequences of the native peoples refusal to convert to Catholicism. In doc 5, the picture shows Native Americans being burned for refusing to convert to Catholicism, causing there to be even fewer Native Americans left alive. Native Americans had a tough decision of either converting to Catholicism or being burned to death. When Christopher Columbus first came to America, one of his first thoughts when he saw the native peoples was, “they would make good slaves and should be converted to Christianity,”(5 Minutes).
