Script Intro: The Mayans were a Mesoamerican civilization, advanced for their time. However, they weren’t known only for their technology and achievements. Mayans also had terrific cuisine, growing and eating the same foods we eat today. Farming: To Mayans, food was so important that it was often connected to religion. They even had a god of maize. There were many techniques for farming their food, like the slash-and-burn method, raised bed farming, and building terraces. Farmers took up a massive percentage of the Mayan population. What foods?: Mayans also grew beans, squash, and chile peppers. Animals like deer, peccary, turkeys, quails, ducks, monkeys, and armadillos were hunted. Mayans also used nets to catch fish, and dogs were stuffed with corn and eaten. Meat was often cooked with stew and vegetables. Some fruits they ate were guava, papaya, avocado, and custard apple.
