Andrew Carnegie: Robber Baron to Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was a very well-known man. However, many people only know little about his life. Almost everyone knows about Carnegie’s steel business. But, Carnegie made many important contributions that were not very recognized. Although Andrew Carnegie made significant contributions with his steel company, he made many more outside of his business.

Andrew Carnegie sold his steel company to the United States Steel Corporation in 1901 (Biography.com Editors, 2014). Carnegie donated five million dollars to the New York Public Library, established the Carnegie Institute of Technology, created the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, formed the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and bolstered the opening of over 2,800 libraries (Biography.com Editors, 2014). Andrew Carnegie made a huge impact due to his philanthropic work. The donations and support of Andrew Carnegie were the cause of many important contributions to society.
Andrew Carnegie made a dramatic change in his life when he decided to sell his company. After Andrew Carnegie sold his company, he decided to spend the rest of his life helping others (Biography.com Editors, 2014). Carnegie had begun his philanthropic work years before by building libraries and making donations, but he decided to expand his efforts in the early twentieth century (Biography.com Editors, 2014). Louise Whitfield had been a friend of Carnegie’s for a while but could not be with him, because she had to care for her family (MacGregor, 2019). Once Carnegie’s mother and brother passed away, he was also in need, so Louise finally turned her attention to him (MacGregor, 2019). On April 22, 1887, Louise Whitfield and Andrew Carnegie became husband and wife (MacGregor, 2019). Carnegie described her as a peacemaker and the person who filled the gap in his heart after he lost his mother and brother (MacGregor, 2019).
