Pop art or “popular” art began in the mid 1950’s in New York and London. In 1954, the word ‘POP’ was made by the British art critic Lawrence Alloway that was meant to express popular culture. This style stayed popular until the late 1960’s. Pop art had a ‘hip’ feel that was more modern. These works would be bright, bold, and simple. The works would have different styles of techniques and colors. The most fascinating part was that it was everyday things that you would see. Another good thing about pop art is that you could make it out of anything as long as it pops. Andy Warhol was one of the most famous pop art artists alive. He felt like they have been ‘stripped of their meaning’. Warhol said, “I think that every painting should be the same size and the same color so they’re all interchangeable and nobody thinks that they have a better or worse painting.” He noticed that America is the country that started the tradition where the richest consumers buy the same things as the poorest. “You could be watching television and see the president with a coca-cola can.” Warhol wanted to end as a business artist. He felt that he wanted to be a machine and that everything that he does machine-like is what he wanted to do. He told people that if you wanted to know about him, to look at the surface of his paintings and just look at him in general and that’s him; there’s nothing behind it or him. Some of Andy Warhol’s famous works are Campbell's Soup Cans, which was just a painting of the soup cans. They were bright and exactly like what the can would look like in real life.
