There was a clear lack of funding for research, and the outreach of local communities was not adequate. Furthermore, there was a scarcity of drugs, as Kushner reveals by the fact that only Roy Cohn was able to pull strings to get the life saving medicine. Despite the hardships endured by the gay community, the scrutiny that they often faced allowed them to adapt their abilities to handle their unfortunate place in American society. Cohn, the very real villain of Angels in America, has a dynamic characterization that positions him in different parts of the American food chain throughout the play. At the onset of the story, Kushner presents Cohn as a strong willed, successful lawyer with much “clout”. He is seen as the ideal businessman, for he is successful in his work, he is wealthy beyond compare, and he possesses great power both politically and socially. While still deeply closeted, he renounces his homosexuality, as he is scared of what it may do to his image in they eyes of his co-workers and neighbors. By rejecting the fact that he is gay, Cohn is able to keep his high status, but only temporarily. As soon as he contracts the HIV virus, he experiences a decline in influence, and his clout rapidly diminishes. Near the end of his battle with AIDS, Cohn vents his distress to his reoccurring vision of Ethel Rosenberg. In a rage he explains to her that, “The worst thing about being sick in America, Ethel, is that you are booted out of the parade. America has no use for the sick… That’s America. It’s just no country for the infirm” (Angels II:62). The once all-powerful Cohn is then broken and useless as he struggles in his meek position.
